Pioneer Trek!

As you all (should) know, the Stake Youth Pioneer Trek is happening December 29-31, for youth ages 14 and up. You should already have all of your papers turned in and be ready to go!! Here is a list of everything you should bring with you on the Trek. To quote from the instruction booklet:

"Because of the weight and space limitations of our handcart design and our attempt to create an authentic pioneer experience, you will be limited in the amount of gear you can bring. You will need the items listed here, but please don't bring anything else. We cannot take it with us."

On with the list!
  • 1 large flour sack or duffel bag for your gear (line it with a plastic garbage bag and come with all your gear inside)
  • 1 warm sleeping bag
  • 1 blanket
  • 1 coat (heavy and warm)
  • 1 rain poncho--plastic to serve as a ground-cloth or shelter from rain
  • 1 pair of tennis shoes (an old pair)
  • 1 pair of shoes to hike in (don't buy new ones--they will give you blisters. Sturdy running or tennis shoes will work fine if you don't have hiking boots)
  • 3 pairs of sturdy socks
  • 3 sets of underclothing
  • bandanna (these are necessary items)
  • 1 pie plate
  • 1 large spoon
  • 1 tin cup
  • 1 small hand towel and a comb or brush
  • 1 toothbrush
  • 5 band-aids and prescribed medication only
  • An old Book of Mormon and personal journal materials
  • Heavy-duty plastic garbage bags
  • Chap stick
Just for girls:
  • 2 long-sleeve or 3/4 sleeve blouses and skirts or long dresses
  • 2 mid-calf length, short sleeve dresses
  • 1 petticoat
  • 1 (or 2) bonnets
  • 1 pair of knee length bloomers (can be made out of old pajama bottoms or hospital pants)
  • 1 apron
  • 1 nightgown
  • Feminine hygiene supplies
Optional Items:
  • 1 old shawl
  • camera and film (place in a protective case)
  • pocket knife
  • sunscreen (nothing with an SPF less than 10)
  • a harmonica or other small musical instrument
  • glasses should be worn instead of contacts in most cases. It is very difficult to care for contacts in a wilderness setting.
"Please do not bring valuables such as jewelry or watches. Please arrive dressed in pioneer clothing. You will be wearing one set of clothing when you arrive, and another to change into later. Buy as much of your clothing as possible at second-hand stores such as Good Will. Don't wear good clothing that you wouldn't want to subject to heavy use."

That's quite a list. Good luck, girls! If you need any help with any of the items, let us know :)
